Study Overview
Dermal papilla cells are located at the root of hair follicles and are responsible for the growth of new hair. They act as the command center for hair growth, signaling epithelial stem cells in the root sheath to divide, regenerate the hair shaft, and control thickness, shape, and pigmentation. Growth factors such as FGF-7 are responsible for promoting hair growth in these cells. Other factors such as VEGF, work by promoting the formation of blood vessels in surrounding cells, supporting growth.

In this study, test substances are added to a culture of dermal papilla cells to understand the impact on FGF-7 and VEGF expression. By performing real-time PCR, we are able to evaluate mRNA expression of these proteins, and also ELISA to measure protein expression levels.
